How Do Crosslinkers Work?

July 18, 2023
Crosslinkers are used to tie coating molecules together to strengthen their bond, make them more chemically resistant, and improve adhesion. These products can be referred to as a crosslinker or a catalyst/hardener. There are two types of catalyzed WB coatings, referred to as pre-cat and post-cat, or 1K and 2K. We covered the differences between these types of coatings, including hybrid 2K coatings, in “The Difference between Renner Italia 1K and 2K Products.”

What Is Crosslinking?

Crosslinking is a chemical process that pulls molecules in a coating closer together, which makes them more difficult to pull apart. When the molecules are closer together, they are stronger, more chemically resistant, mildew resistant, and more adhesive. Imagine you have a glass filled with ice. The glass is technically full, but because the ice is solid, you can easily pour water or other fluids into the glass, and the fluid will reach the bottom. If you wanted to keep water or fluids from reaching the bottom of the glass, you’d need to melt the cubes together and refreeze them, so they form one solid sheet. That single, large layer of ice is far stronger than smaller, individual cubes, which can break apart much easier. In coating mixes, crosslinkers operate like an ice melter and freezer, making molecules flow together through a chemical process to form an impermeable layer, with no space for liquid or gasses to pass through.

Crosslinkers Make Stronger, More Durable Coatings

Catalyzed coatings are far superior to uncatalyzed coatings, especially in locations like the kitchen or bathroom, where moisture is always present. Crosslinkers provide the protection wood needs against water, chemicals, and heat to maintain its long lasting durability. Professional finishers expect and demand these kinds of coatings for their projects because their customers have come to expect the highest quality finish. Crosslinking delivers the chemical process necessary to satisfy your customers’ expectations.
